A day before

18-Aug-2014 – Having visited the confluence 49°N 133°E, I continued to move west. I driving near the confluence 49°N 132°E and Londoko village, and was surprised by the condition of "Amur" route. In many places there was no asphalt, the road had waves-form, there were dangerous pits, there are unmown high grass and bushed on the roadside. I drove more 200 km and then spent the night in the car on the route (49°06'48"N 130°49'41"E) next to the cafe, which is located in the Amurskaya oblast' [Amur region], 15 km from the border with the Yevreyskaya [Jewish] Autonomous Region. Unexpectedly for these places the night was warm, +19°C.

The next day, early in the morning, I drove 160 km up to the turn to Talakan (23 km after Novobureiskiy) and then further on 15 km to Deya river, there I turned right onto a dirt road. After 5 km I overcame Mutovka rivulet, but after 900 meters Deya river stopped me. Bridge has destroyed, so nobody lives in Bakhirev village. Right in front of the river one can see a field road leading toward the confluence.

It was 5.04 km from here to the “interesting” confluence point. Why is it interesting? Firstly, and most importantly, soon this CP will go under water after the completion of Nizhne-Bureya HPP, secondly, it's a round-number confluence, there is a lot of zeros in its “name”, and thirdly, I usually try to reach the target after my unsuccessful attempts (for instance, as it was at 56°N87°E, 51°N88°E, 55°N66°E, etc).

I left the car (at 50°02'32,2" N129°58'28,8"E), took 1.5 liters of drinking water and set off with the hope to cope for 3 or 4 hours. What a cruel mistake! The feeling of proximity to desired confluence clouded my mind again. There were no problems at starting 2 km, I approached the goal onto a deserted field road turning into a trail; my clothing was thoroughly soaked up to the waist because of the morning dew on the grass. An intermittent flow stretches along the trail on the left. A ridge with steep slope extends on the right. As soon as I reached the waypoint 50°01'27"N 129°58'22"E, the trail disappeared, as harbingers of a wetland, tussocks have began under feet.

To the goal was only 3 km away. The question arose: how to go? I took a right and walked through tall thick wet grass to the foot of a steep slope covered with the same thick grass, and... returned to the original position. I fully felt the “charm” of the August nature, maximum growth and splendor impassable vegetation. To go along the ridge meant to constantly lift up, and then go down in ravines. I went straightforward and after 150 meters I stopped with exhaustion. Overcoming tussocks, that were hidden behind a thick and dense grass up to the knee level, was even more ordeal. Here you need to go either at a snail's pace, feeling each hummock by the foot, or if you increase the speed, then you certainly stumble … and as a result you fall in the swamp muck with hard lifting and breath-losing. So my brain began to persuade me to come back but my feet would not obey and plod on to the edge of the slope and the plain and then further on to the goal. It was stuffy and hot, the sweat was pouring off me, drinking water quickly ran out, my dry throat greedily gulped an air. My strength was quickly draining away for overcoming the thick wall of bushes and breaking through the grass, entwined by loach, durable as a wire. Several times I saw deer moving away from me. Repellent saved me from gnats.

The nearer I got to the target, the harder it became for me, every step was a struggle. I became more and longer rest. After another break I looked at GPS navigator – how many did I pass? – and it showed 20 m, although it seemed that it was 100 m. There began the symptoms of my body dehydration. When the goal was in 900 m, I decided to take a left and go straightforward (before that I was moving in a circle on the border of the slope and plains, where the soil was dry, and I thought it was more convenient). After more 200 metres, water appeared among the tussocks. I had to slightly quench my thirst by percolating the swamp water through the cap. Slowly avoiding dangerous areas, I was getting closer to the goal.

When I felt the ground swaying beneath me, then I stopped. The GPS navigator showed 80 m to the CP, that meant I was within the confluence zone! I did not take longer any chances in the swamp, the goal was reached, the confluence was cleared, and I felt either happiness, or anxiety: I had to overcome the more difficult way back. The confluence is located in Bureya district of Amur region, in the waterlogged floodplain of Bureya river. Only high and thick grasses are around. I made photographs and then headed to the slope of the ridge at right angle. I hoped it will be closer to the dry soil, where I could thoroughly relax.

I could not reach the slope, and collapsed between the tussocks at the first dry place I met. I took off my shoes and tried to be dead to the world... even for 15 minutes, but I could not do it. I had dry mouth, my body demanded some food, muscles needed glucose, I felt slightly queasy, my head was filled with thoughts and solving the problem of survival and optimal return to the car. I was in such conditions that if there was a cellular connection and the phone, then I'd called to the rescue service. But in my situation it was necessary to rely only on myself. I was wondering. In the west of the confluence there was a gully and there was the only place where some stream flows from and feeds this swampy valley. When I walked to the goal, I did not reach this gully, turning to the left to the CP, and I didn't met any creeks along the way. If I'll be able to find a creek on my way back, then I'll have the strength to climb the ridge, where (hopefully) there will be less obstacles and made return journey more easy. I decided to dig in my walking backpack and was surprised to find the remains of the aeroplane breakfast: two bags of sugar (that's fine so it's glucose!), one bag of salt and a sucking candy.

My calculation was correct and at the waypoint 49°59'56,8"N 129°59'24,2"E I came across the salutary stream of spring water barely noticable in the grass! I drunk my fill (as I thought), and replenish the water supply. After that I climbed up on a hill and went to my car onto forested ridge, bypassing and crossing ravines. To walk through the forest ferns and small bushes was really easier. I admired a bird's-eye scenery of marshy plains. which will soon turn into a reservoir. At 900 m to the beginning of the trail, I had to descend to the ravine and wade through the thick grass and shrubs, losing there my last forces.

Finally, I got on the trail, where I started the difficult path to the confluence. Drinking water was gone, my throat was dry thoroughly, my feet barely moved. It took 55 min to overcome the last 2 km to the car onto the flat trail. I could not believe my luck that saved. Of all the confluences that I've visited, even such difficult as the 51°N88°E, 56°N79°E, 61°N76°E could not be compared with this one, the most difficult. I opened the car and decided to eat a spoonful of honey and drink some water. With the first swallowing a strong spasm of pain gripped my throat, I could not swallow even water. For the first time in my life I felt such pain.

I bathed in cold water of Mutovka creek, changed my clothes and continued to drive west. The plan was to visit 54°N 128°E. After passing 280 km, I stopped for the night near a café before Gashchenka village. I was hungry, the throat pain seemed to pass off. I entered into a café, on an empty stomach I ordered much meal, but at the first swallowing a strong and sharp pain in the throat appeared again. Having left untouched food to the surprise of the café staff, I laid down in the car and fell asleep.
