English narrative

18-Feb-2006 -- On February 18th 2006, around noon, I, Alexander Ugryumov, left my farmstead in the village Voznesenkoe (photo #8) in a minivan Toyota Estima (4WD, supercharger, etc.). First I overcame 16 km on the ice of the river Amur (Cupid), there were no roads as such. More precisely, as they say in Russia, there are no roads, but directions. Having passed through Amursk, I turned left and further passed through the settlements Elban, Tyeysin and Myengon. In total up to the settlement Bolon turned out to be 130 km. In Bolon I found out that the forest road on which I was going to reach almost to the point, one of these days was swept over by snow. Having measured the distance from the settlement up to the point, it turned out to be 14 km in a straight line. In view of the bends in the road, naturally it is more.

As I live in a village myself, I quickly found common ground with the local population, and it was agreed that the next morning they would bring me to the point on a "Buran" snowmobile. The problem was that on Saturday the more-or-less decent snowmobiles were almost all in the taiga, people were hunting. Therefore I should go on a snowmobile made in 1982. I drove my vehicle into the warm box of a local power station (photo #9), which itself was arranged into a local "hotel". The next morning they began with minor repairs: they replaced a spark plug, an idle gasses rope was worn out, they cleaned up a few wires. All of it was, of course, out in the street -- the air temperature was –36 degrees Celsius. I noticed that two local residents who helped me have had their fingers frozen, the skin on the tips of their fingers was practically gone. Then the owner of a snowmobile in general has snipped off the ragged end of the rope, having declared, that idle gasses in general are not even necessary. They brought out gasoline and mixed in engine oil of suspicious color. It was similar to an emulsion. On a sled for me they threw a blanket and a sheepskin coat. It gradually got warmer. Having driven out from the settlement 3 kilometers, we stopped – it jammed the engine. I took the backpack and skis and went the other 13 km on foot. The point was reached without stops. The most difficult was the last kilometer, when I had to turn off of the snowy forest roads onto the "mar" (for those who don't know – a marshy flat area with hummocks). Very deep snow, about 70-80 centimeters. It was difficult going, even on fur-lined hunting skis (lined with fur from the shin of an elk which I pasted on 4 years ago with glue). It was necessary to go very slowly and cautiously, as on a mine field. A wrong step and you fall (a couple of times in all ), having hit a hummock under the snow. On the horizon, in the north, across the route of my movement, lay a mountain ridge. When there were 600m left, I threw off my backpack and took with myself only a tripod and a camera. The point of crossing is located almost immediately past the river Tuksaki.

For orientation I used a GPS Garmin eTrex Vista with the map of the Khabarovsk territory loaded into it. Having reached the point of crossing 50N 136E, the digital camera Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-F717 made the necessary pictures. The cardinal directions: south (photo #2), West (photo #3), north (photo #1), east (photo #4). A close-up of the GPS readings (photo #5). On the place of a confluence point there is the camera tripod (photo #6), I'm standing on the confluence point (photo #7).

This is already my fourth confluence point of Khabarovsk territory's 89. Perhaps some geographical society in the future will even value the work of enthusiasts like us, through the description of natural-climatic properties of district, especially considering the global nature of the project – the same way is described the surface of the whole planet. In any case you receive satisfaction from the reached goal. In such campaigns it is necessary to plan carefully while still at home, in advance. To study maps of the district, to pick up corresponding equipment.

Having had a bite, I was going to go back, my watch showed 3:45 PM, the sun sagged. By 7:00 it should darken already. I should cross 16 km in approximately 4 – 5 hours. Hence, a part of a way it was necessary to go in darkness. I didn't have a lantern, but it wasn't even necessary, the moon was almost full, it should be bright. Having passed in the opposite direction about 2 kilometers, I was surprised to hear the sound of a motor. A Russian jeep "Niva" was passing in low gear. Three inhabitants of Elban returned from subglacial fishing. So I was unexpectedly back in Bolon quickly and in comfort. In 2 hours I was at home.

It is a true saying: "The walking one will overcome the road".

I wish all good luck in their campaigns.
