15-Jun-2007 – Day 6. A blessing in disguise or the present of destiny. Continued from the point 61°N 50°E.

That day we planned to visit easy confluence 61°N 50°E and to depart home. We’ve visited the point, but didn’t go home. We relied we were less than 100 km from Syktyvkar city, the capital of Komi Republic. Nobody knows when we would be here next time, so we decided to visit this city. It turned out that in Maxim’s childhood he had a notebook with the picture of Lenin monument, titled as “Syktyvkar” (obviously notebooks have been made in local pulp and paper mill). Since that Maxim dreamed to visit "world's end", “remote countries” – in Syktyvkar – and to see this monument there. So we decided to go to Syktyvkar. As it turned out later it was a good-fortune decision.

While we drove to Syktyvkar, the wheels wobble begun. We observed the wheels and understood that it was wheels misbalance. It has resulted from lamps of clay dried up on the rims. We couldn’t clean the rims and drove to the city to find tire-mounting office (instead of to find car wash for some unknown reason). When they dismount the wheel the shock-absorber liquid flowed out. It was 1300 km to Moscow. We started to drive from one service station to another till we realized that the urgent repair is not absolutely possible. At our meandering in the city we visited occasionally a bookstore. It turned out that Vladimir has a dream as well… to obtain good map of Komi republic. It cannot be found in Moscow. And we bought the map. The map was remarkable; there were latitude and longitude lines there (Moscow publishers don’t depict them, but publishers from Saint-Petersburg did it!). At this map we discovered that there is a new, asphalted road led to the west (towards Kotlas); the road passed almost along 61st degree North! And this road doesn’t present at any map we’ve seen before. We asked local people and they said they usually use this road to reach Vologda city (and hence, Moscow). What a fortune! It means we don’t need to drive 200 km onto the worse bumpy “Vyatka” motorway in Kirovskaya oblast’; and it is very good for our shock-absorber. Meanwhile we flew between auto-services and had a lunch, the day tended to the evening. Less time is remained for sightseeing. In general, the city made a good impression; it’s nice and quite tidy.

Finally we made sure we couldn’t fix the shock-absorber. But its leakage is not so important and we can forget about it for a while. At 7.15 pm we set off towards Kotlas. At the beginning we drove onto “Vyatka” and passed again in 1 km from the point 61°N 50°E, then soon we found the right turn (road direction sign to Shyrokyi Priluk).

Excellent new road! And it passes in 500 meters from the point 61°N 49°E. At that place (50 km mark) the road has NW direction. At 9.30 pm we left a car at roadside and went to the west onto timber-lorry track. It's so nice that there is a white night at this latitude! After 300 m the road went to the right while a logging path went left. We turn to this path and reached the point onto it. The forest was dense and wet after the rain. Satellite signal almost disappeared. Much time was spent to find the signal. Last days we visited 8 forest confluences and our GPS receivers usually caught several satellites. But this time we had to comb the wood thoroughly searching the signal. The distance to exact spot jumped from 70 till 120 meters. Finally we found a point in 20 meters from the confluence and made picture of the GPS screen. Cardinal direction views have been photographed in 50m from precise spot. Pictures are not good because it was quite dark there.

He that seeks finds! The confluence 61°N 49°E was unexpected present which compensated us two unsuccessful visits, 60°N 50°E and 60°N 44°E. It was 1100 km to our home and we immediately drove further. The road entered Arhangel'skaya oblast' and its quality became much worse. About 10-12 km we crawled in all-round mud. Before Koryazhma an asphalt paving appeared again. After Kotlas we turned to the south towards Vologodkaya oblast’. Both of us were tired as drivers and we had to stop for few hours sleeping between Velikyi Ustiyg and Tot’ma. At 3 pm on June, 16 we were in Moscow.

CP visit data:

  • Distance from Syktyvkar city: 150 km
  • Distance from previous point: 68 km
  • Straight distance to CP from the parking: 0.5 km
  • Walking distance (time) to the CP: 0.7 km (15 min)
  • Time at the CP: 22.00
  • Altitude: 160 m
  • Path conditions: dirt road, logging paths, forest
  • Weather condition: cloudy, after rain, +13°C

Let us aggregate. During 6.5 days we drove 3500 km onto the roads (sometimes off-road) of 7 regions of Russia. At that journey we “opened” 4 points in Kirovskaya oblast’ [region], 3 points in Vologodskaya and 3 points in Komi Republic. Or alternatively: 6 points at 60-th degree North, 2 points at 59-th and 2 points at 61-st. Two more points at 60-th degree left incomplete. We walked more than 50 km. We opened the new road with unexpected present as the point 61°N 49°E. We saw the bear and cranes. We made sure again in kindness and hospitality of Russian Northern citizens, in attractiveness of North Russian humble nature beauty.
