09-Sep-2001 -- This confluence point is 25 km west of Bowen and about 1.5 kilometres off the main highway to Townsville. It lies in a large grazing paddock that is an easy walk from the road, towards Mt Roundback, a large granite hill.
I followed a dry creek bed halfway to the confluence and enjoyed the early morning bird calls from the trees on the creek. The loudest was the blue-winged kookaburra, the larger, tropical relative of the laughing kookaburra. Blue-wings are more attractive but although they try hard, they just can’t laugh. Their chortling sounds like kookaburra being choked, or perhaps it's just that they never quite got the joke.
