02-Apr-2006 -- This is my first confluence visit and I started off with a nice easy one that is only 183 km basically west from my current home base of Emerald Qld. As it turned out I was able to drive right up to the confluence point that was near a fenceline in a large flat paddock.
The hardest part of the day was getting my 13 old daughter out of bed on a Sunday before 9am. Having achieved that task I felt the rest of the day would go well. We headed out from Emerald towards Barcaldine/Longreach. The turnoff was 99 km out of emerald and the remaining 84 km was on dirt farm access tracks. The majority of the dirt driving was on well formed mail roads. There were a number of short sections that were basic unformed dirt tracks. The entire journey was easily done in 2WD.
We arrived at the location, parked under a shady tree and walked the last 100m to the confluence point, although we could have easily driven all the way. The flies were very enthusiastic in welcoming us to 24s147e and taking part in our sandwich lunch to mark the event.
The photos show a dry flat paddock that has clearly missed out on some of the seasonal thunderstorms that have come through that area. 15 km up the road it was relatively green.
The GPS showed an accuracy of within 4 metres. This was not that surprising given how flat the area was, I had 10 satellites in view.
