#1: Typical countryside in this area

(visited by Bernie O'Shea)

18-Jul-2005 -- This was a group effort by members of the ‘Idlers’ Four Wheel Drive Club of Victoria, from Melbourne, Australia, who happened to be camped close by at the small town of Eulo, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the founding of their club. Being strangers to the area, we didn’t know who to approach for permission to enter private land, but the Eulo Hotel staff provided us with names and a phone number. The owners of the land were very cautious about approving the expedition because of legal advice about insurance, but the club has cover for its activities, and so we got the go-ahead.

The confluence is on the property ‘Penaroo’ and the map we had shows it to be quite close to a water course and about 2K from the nearest vehicle track. In fact we managed to drive, on an unmarked track, to within 350m of the confluence, but not before the leader of the group got his vehicle bogged in the soft ground surrounding a leaky water pipe which was running alongside the track. Snatch-strap technique was applied and he was pulled onto firm ground very efficiently by another vehicle. The confluence was indeed beside a dry creek bed, in the midst of the sandy, rocky and sparsely vegetated terrain typical of the area. Several members of the party had their GPS receivers with them, and fun was had trying to get them all to agree about the exact spot!

Photographs were taken, and we tramped back the 350 metres to the vehicles. Then it was a relatively short drive back to our camp in Eulo.

The group consisted of the following members of the club:

Bernie and Judith O’Shea, (team leaders) David Barclay, Jim and Libby Boyle, Don and Jan Fraser, Elaine Holloway, Don MacKay, Wal and Sue Page, Tony and Joyce Phillips, Norm Smith, Mel and Margaret Tripp.
