#1: The confluence area

(visited by Julian Nikadie)

11-Feb-2004 -- This confluence is in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park - which is part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

The confluence is about 4 km WSW of Lake Marion, which is the closest access point.

I started the confluence visit by walking around Lake St Clair and then up the track to Lake Marion, where I camped for the night.

I began my walk out to the confluence before 6 am, and it was not until 12:30 pm that I got there.

Just 200 metres before I reached the confluence I was walking through very thick scrub - but fortunately this opened up to beautiful myrtle forest which made finding and photographing the confluence far more enjoyable.

As the photos show, the confluence is under heavy tree cover, so my GPS receiver was switching between satellites - as a result I would be standing at one point and being told to move 2 m to the right, which I would do only to be told to move 2 m to the left! The "all zeros" shot eluded me, but I did get very close.

It wasn't until 6:00 pm that I got back to my main pack - too late for the walk back to Narcissus Hut before dark as initially planned, but as I didn't want to camp at Lake Marion again I decided to move as quickly as I could - fortunately I managed to reach the hut soon after 8:00 pm, while it was still light.

All up, the walk from Lake Marion out to the confluence and back to the hut took over 14 hours, and with an 8 hour walk to get to Lake Marion the day before, I put in 22 hours of walking ... after spending the night at Narcissus Hut I decided to take the ferry across Lake St Clair to get back to my car.
