#1: The Confluence from 15 m

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

14-Jun-2014 -- This is the first out of 3 reports reaching confluence points in Central France.

Cycling and confluencing is my favourite combination of travel. To make it to a (to me new) confluence point and back to Zurich within a weekend, I need to approach the area by train and start cycling from a train station. This confluence was in a distance of exactly 200 km beeline from Zurich the nearest confluence that I had not been visited so far. So I only took a short train ride from Zurich to Basel and started cycling from there. I stayed the night in the village Sewen near the 1200 m high Vosges pass called Ballon d’Alsace.

On confluence day, I got up at 4:30 AM and was served a wonderful cyclist’s breakfast at 5 AM in my Auberge! I was really lucky that another group of cyclists had organised such an early breakfast and I could benefit from that. So I managed to get to the top of the pass at 7 AM (just one car had passed me on the way up).

So I made my way west, crossing Remiremont, Bains-les-Bains, and finally I reached the village Martinvelle. The confluence is just 2.5 km further north. A forest track leads up to a distance of 50 m. From there, a forest aisle directly leads to the confluence point.

There is a pile of wood exactly at the confluence. Otherwise the area is covered with deciduous forest and ferns.

I continued cycling westwards in direction Chaumont.
