#1: View looking North from the confluence

(visited by Clarence Pelley)

02-Mar-2003 -- We drove the Trans Canada Highway for about one hour, then travelled more than 7 kilometers by skis and snowshoes over a snow-covered forestry access road to visit the confluence. It was located about 700 meters beyond the end of the road, in a virgin black spruce grove, on a bog, at the bottom of a small valley.

Since we are still in the frosty grip of winter, and the road we travelled is covered with about a meter of snow, the skis and snowshoes were our only options.

We celebrated the confluence visit with a boil-up, consisting of boiled tea and lunch. In our environmentally friendly tradition of leaving no trace, we used a backpacker's stove rather than lighting a fire. Others who may visit the point will see no evidence that we had been there.

Even though we frequently hike, ski or snowshoe the mountains of western Newfoundland Island, this is our first confluence visit. We now have plans to visit several others.
