11-Aug-2003 -- Our trip started on August 9 from Gull Harbour, on Lake Winnipeg, approximately 100km south of the confluence visit via my 30' sailing vessel Blue Ayes. The first sailing day was good winds from the north, the direction we were travelling, so we made it only halfway to our first night stop of Biscuit Harbour. The following day we set off in 20 knot winds towards Princess Harbour and arrived August 10. The wind was shifting to the south, and starting to build. As yet, we had kept fairly dry, but waves were beginning to build, and we knew the following day would present its' challenges as we would attempt to visit this confluence, located only 10 nautical miles north west of Princess Harbour.

Monday August 11 was another windy day with airspeeds of 25 knots, a good challenge for any boat 30' and less. We set off with GPS in hand and an electronic chart of Lake Winnipeg with navigation software on the laptop. We set off on a broad reach, arriving at our destination in about 2 hours. As we got close to the confluence, we started to take pictures of the GPS, and to my amazement, we got a picture of the exact location (minus GPS error) of N52 00' 00.0" W097 00' 00.0". This was some pure luck, as navigating at 7 knots in heavy winds and large waves is not a precise task.

As expected, there was nothing but lake around, with the closest point of land being 6 km away. Tuesday we started our trip back south to Gull Harbour, reaching only halfway to Granite Quarry, as the wind and waves had started to build from the south. Our final sail back on Wednesday lasted 13 hours, as we beat south through 10 foot waves and southern winds gusting to 40 knots. We were completely soaked, but arrived in one piece at 1:00 in the morning. The moon was almost full, and provided some light to see the shoreline at night.
