#1: Wiew to the East

(visited by Erkki Ahonen and Helena Ahonen)

03-May-2002 -- From the 63N 17E confluence we drove 80 kilometres, and came to a place called Kälarne. This place is located 2,2 kilometres from the confluence, on a small road, and all you can see is woods and a lot (I mean a lot) of water (melted snow).

After stopping the car, we needm to decide whether to go or not. We are quite tired, after getting up at 04.30 am, and driving almost 250 kilometres on one day, and rumbling around in the woods from our earlier confluence-findings. We decided to go for it, my wife and I. We had come so far, that we just could not turn around and leave it unfound.

But looking back, it was not an easy decision!

We had never seen such a wild forest, with trees lying here and there (yes, everywhere!). And water. Those bathing shorts would come to use now, again. It took us almost two hours just to get to this confluence. It was almost impossible to keep up the suggested speed of our GPS: 2 km/hour. Is this what it is to walk in a rainforest, or maybe a swamp? Could it be more difficult than this? But as we have a saying in Sweden: If you are in the game, you must take the consequences of the game!

At the confluence, 63N 16E, there where so much water we had to jump between the peat hummocks sticking up from the water so that we wouldn't get wet up to our necks.

We had some difficulties to find the exact spot (imagine us standing with water EVERYWHERE, little grass to stand on, and we are TIRED!) We took some pictures, we where there!

Our way back is a story for itself, but we can tell you, that we where tired, both in brain and in the legs. Unfortunately we started to discuss how we would feel tomorrow, trying to get up from the bed… Our conclusion was that this is probably our last confluence. But, never say never, or what?
