(visited by Rainer Mautz and Elionora)

25-Jan-2008 -- The story starts from 5N 116E.

Our stay in Kuwait came unexpected: actually we were on a flight from Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) to Frankfurt (Germany) with a 2-hour stop-over at Kuwait City Airport. But when we found out that we could get visa on arrival, we didn't take our connecting flight and stayed two days longer.

This not-yet-completed Confluence was waiting for us just 50 km outside of Kuwait City. But from previous attempters we knew that regulatory problems were ahead due to its location in the Burqān Oil Field. Permission to visit the oilfield would take some time and since we had spontaneously come to Kuwait, we were not prepared at all. To make a long story short: The Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) wasn't able to arrange a quick trip for us. On the weekend (Friday and Saturday) the office was closed. However, our investigation brought some more information:

KOC has its Public Relations Department (Tel. 00965-3867703), who organises guided tours for groups that want to explore the oilfield. If you call a couple days ahead stating the place you want to visit, the date, and the details of the participants, they will arrange a tour. You can also enquire about your special visit via email to Mrs Hakim (hakim(at)kockw.com).

We took a public bus near the city of Aḥmadiyy, but we skipped the trip to the fence.

This completes the write-up of our trip through Asia visiting seven confluences.

CP visit details:

  • Minimal distance according to GPS: 11 km
  • Vegetation: some grass
  • Weather: overcast, 9° C (temperature according public thermometer)
  • Description of the CP: South of Kuwait City in the desert near the city of Aḥmadiyy. In a fenced property of the Kuwait Oil Company
  • Given Name: The Oily Desert Confluence

  Notes
As this Confluence seems to lie inside an oilfield of the Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) where photos can not be taken without permission, we recommend any visitors planning to visit this Confluence to get in touch with KOC's Public Relations Department (Tel. 00965-3867703) beforehand, explaining the purpose of the visit, and trying to get photo permissions.
