30-Jan-2007 -- During the second world war Biak was a place of heavy fighting between Japan and the USA, but today it is a sleepy island just north of New Guinea. Hiring a motorbike is a good way to get around this beautiful place. The confluence lies in the middle of the island, a few kilometers west of the main north-south road. The satellite photo in Google Earth doesn’t give much information, because the area is obscured by clouds.

The drive from Biak town, the main settlement on the island, towards north, leads through a beautiful landscape with only a few small villages scattered along the road.

When I arrived at 1° S, the confluence was still 5.5 km to the west. I asked around for a possibility to get nearer, but people told me that there was no road. I drove back south and after 5 km I found another small road leading northeast towards the confluence. But after reaching 1°S again, I was still 3 km away an the road lead further north, away from the confluence. From here it might be difficult but possible to reach the confluence on foot, but I didn’t have time left, since I had to reach a ferry that evening.

I found another road further south leading west, but later it turned out to lead straight south, away from the confluence. So I gave up and returned to Biak town.
