(visited by Anton Matthee and Jan Nortje)

A trip offering the opportunity to visit three Confluences was done from Palapye (Botswana) to the origin of the Zambezi River in the northwest corner of Zambia and back. The source is close to where the borders of Zambia, Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) meet. See this website for the complete trip notes that was phoned through by sat phone on a daily basis for your background information. This was the first Confluence visited on Day 3 of our trip:

03-Oct-2004 -- Day started in Kasane (Botswana) via Katima Malilo (Namibia) and ended at Kabula lodge (Zambia).

The two Land Cruisers continued along the planned route to visit the degree confluence point at 18S 25E. With Alet Nortje guarding the vehicles, Anton and Jan (armed with a spade) hiked 1.2 km to the Confluence, obtained the necessary photographic proof, and returned to the vehicles. Lions is a real danger, as this Confluence is in the Chobe National Park (Northern Botswana).

The area is very sandy and the 1.2 km walk to the Confluence took its toll on Anton and Jan. They were away from the cars for about an hour.

From here they decided to divert a little from the planned route to take in some more scenery next to the Chobe River. They had lunch at the Serondela picnic spot (17.83963°S 25.00844°E), before returning to the original route plan and proceeding to Katima Malilo in the Caprivi strip of Namibia.

Continued at 16S 23E.
