#1: The Confluence from 30 m

(visited by Rainer Mautz and Elionora)

17-Jan-2012 -- This is the 9th out of ten confluences that we visited during our trip to Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. The story begins at 35°S 59°W. The previous confluence visit is 54°S 68°W.

On our return trip from Ushuaia and Rio Gallegos we came through this Chilean part of Tierra del Fuego. We started in the morning in Ushuaia and reached the village Cullen (15 km north-west of the CP) in the afternoon. From Cullen, a public road brought us to an intersection to a private road at a distance of 11 km to the CP. At the turnoff, there is a sign post to the “Estancia Danica 20 KMS” and “Nadia 26 KMS”. We simply followed the road until we were 777 m from the confluence point (minimal distance from the road is 570 m). The walk was mainly over flat pasture land, only the last 200 m required a little hike upwards since the confluence point is on a small hill. We saw many Guanacos, sheep and birds. About 15 m from the place that I determined to be the exact zero-point, we found a peck with a metal plate. On the metal plate there are the numbers “G8014 323” graven. Probably this peck is not related to the confluence – we couldn’t clearly ascertain its purpose.

After the visit we turned back to the public road and continued our drive northwards.
