18-Jul-2002 -- Visited by Antti Valmari, Matti T. and Antti T.
This point is about 10 km north of Suomussalmi strait. It is in the heart of Kainuu, a region of Finland famous of its hills, forests, lakes and nature-loving people. While visiting old family friends, I (AV) suddenly realised that 65N29E cannot be far. I told the friends about the confluence project. We looked at a map and found out that 65N29E is in a place they know well. I had a GPS, they had a digital camera --- so off we went!
We drove about 7 km North of Suomussalmi strait, then took a gravel road towards "Lappi". After reaching the right latitude the point is about 1 km to the west. The terrain is swampy forest, not difficult with rubber boots but hopeless for jogging shoes. The point was behind a dry-ish low logged hill. The slope of the hill can be seen in Figure 1 that has been taken to the north.
Since so many pictures of Northern Finland show swamp, we decided to include a photo of lake Kianta to this report. The picture was taken about 1.5 km east of the point.
