09-Dec-2003 -- The confluence point lies about 20 km north-east of the Mtera Dam wall, close to the main road between Iringa and Dodoma. Considering the importance of these two major towns (Dodoma being a capital city), the road is in a terrible state of repair, or should that be disrepair. It is a dirt road full of potholes and corrugation, and the trucks that churn their way between the two towns contribute to the erosion in a big way.

We travelled north from Iringa towards Dodoma. The road winds its way down the Iringa escarpment into a hot valley filled with baobabs (Adensonia digitata) and acacias. The view makes this hot and bumpy route worthwhile (apart from the fact that there isn't an alternative).

The road passes about 800 m to the east of the confluence point. We parked in the shade of a baobab, and I made my way across a cultivated field towards a small hill with an acacia thicket. Fortunately, the thorn trees were not very dense, and it was easy to home in on the point, which lies about 750 m above sea level.

The region is generally dry and hot, but this was exacerbated by the fact that the rains were about two months late. Even at only ten o'clock in the morning it was already well into the high 30°s Centigrade, so the relatively short walk had me soaked by the time I returned to the car.
