12-Sep-2004 -- Continued from 40N 40E.

In September 2004 Cenci and I decided to visit 40N 40E in eastern Anatolia. We started by car in Hamburg and drove through the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia/Montenegro and Bulgaria. After a 3500 km ride we finally reached 40N 40E, but on our way we took the chance to visit some other DCPs in Turkey, too.

39N 39E was the sixth of them and the most adventurous one. The point is situated on the shore of Keban Barajı, one of the large hydroelectric reservoirs in eastern Anatolia. The whole area is under strong military surveillance and as soon as we parked our car in a small village named Payamdüzü, we attracted the attention of two soldiers. The little chat we had led to nothing because our Turkish was pretty bad and they spoke no English at all, so we decided to walk the 2 kilometers to the point.

It was quite beautiful on the spot, after taking the pictures, we bathed in a little ditch and rested in the shade of a tree. On our way back, we realized that the two soldiers were still tailing us in a distance. Back at our car we were welcomed by a large military force - obviously, we made a rather frightening impression: they even brought a tank! We had to show our passports and they wanted to see the pictures in our camera. We explained the purpose of our visit and soon the mood changed. It was a lengthy process to check our identity with the immigration department, so we ended up chatting two hours with very friendly soldiers, drinking tea and sharing cigarettes.

Continued at 39N 33E.
