27-Oct-2007 -- In 2006 we made a very enjoyable expedition to the other Egypt – visiting `Uwaynāt and Gilf Kabīr. This year we determined to have a second visit to take in more of the Gilf, traverse the Great Sand Sea and go on to Sīwa. Having been joined in Dākhila Oasis by our guide Ašraf, we completed our paperwork, collected our Military Escort Sa`īd Šapāna, and set off south on the hardtop road. We were in two vehicles driven by Nāṣir Sulaymān and Muḥammad Zayn al-`Ābidīn.

We had noted that this road passed to the East of 25N 29E and Ašraf agreed to a detour. Some 53 km from Mūt he turned us west off the road onto firm sand. Before long we came to a bank of soft sand dunes and thought we would be thwarted. Eventually the dunes gave way and we found a route through to locate the spot. Scattered across the sand were pieces of what looked like ironstone. We took our readings and photos and set off again.

Just to the South of the Confluence the landscape was dominated by conical basalt mounds. And within 10 minutes we stopped for lunch by a small kopjie where we were thrilled to find a worked flake.
