#1: Looking north, down the North Milk River

(visited by Gordon Haverland, P.Eng.)

05-Aug-2001 -- Having stayed overnight in Milk River, AB, I set out on this Sunday to visit the confluence at Del Bonita/Whiskey Gap. The highway basically parallels the Milk, and later North Milk River, to the border. During prohibition, a lot of whiskey crossed the border near here (at Whiskey Gap).

Just east of where the highway crosses the North Milk River is a road heading south to the top of the river valley. Once on top, you reach a nice plain, which is apparently among the few areas not glaciated during the last ice age. The confluence lies on the property of a local rancher, who looks to be putting in a feedlot. Walking west and a bit south from the ranchers house brought me to the banks of the North Milk River. The confluence lies approximately 60m or so to west, on the other side of the river. Normally the river would be nearly dry at this time of year, but was high enough that I didn't want to chance crossing it alone. A person could have walked in from the other side of the river, but the land was much more rugged.

Closest approach was 48 59' 58.9" North and 112 59' 56.3" W, with a UTM of 353793m Easting and 5429349 Northing. No elevation was recorded.
