#1: North view: the Messak with the ENI operated Elephant Oil Field

(visited by Jon Kåre Hovde and Marc Rierola)

30-Jan-2007 -- This Confluence is located on a dark Jura outcrop of the cretaceous Messak Formation. The surface on this plateau, between the Murzuq Sand Sea in the South and the Awbāriy sand sea in the North, is topped by a hard and resistant sicrete crust. The nearby ENI operated Elephant Oil Field takes its name after the motives found on the famous figurative rock paintings located in the nearby wādies cutting the Messak.

The Confluence was visited on our way back to our camp in the Murzuq Sand Sea after a successful business trip to Awbāriy.
