11-Jan-2014 -- Confluence conquered the first onslaught in January 11, 2014.

Upon return of the investee to conquest of Confluence 9°S 42°W, which is in the State of Piauí in the Northeast region, went to the city of Backwater, where we stayed, and in order to leave the lighter bikes, we left our bags at the Inn. There was no time for lunch because the confluence 10°S 43°W was about 150 miles from Backwater, we didn't know the road conditions and the sun sets early in this region. We still had 300 miles to go to places never before visited by any of us!

We did a quick snack of Granola bars and bottled water and around 3:00 pm cater the bikes and headed for the town of Pilão Arcado. The road from Remanso to Pilão Arcado is dangerous, has many holes and some animals on the track. After covering about 75 km down this road quite bumpy and taking a few frights with goats, pigs and donkeys that were loose wandering the track we came to Pilão Arcado. We didn't know what to expect ahead.

We stopped in a square to ask for directions and the answer from the residents about the conditions for access to the confluence was not encouraging, mainly because we'd have to reduce speed and sunlight leave us in a few minutes. According to the information that we have, our new destination was the Village Lagoa do Padre.

Cross the village in quickstep and continued southbound. It was then that we realized that the main road was moving away from the confluence. We did a u-turn and found a fork that gave access to a path of soft sand that led us to a location closer to the confluence 10°S 42°W. Great little... Stop the bikes and with machete in hand, followed on foot, dodging the spines of the caatinga until our goal.

By the time we reached the confluence the Moon appeared in the sky as if it were congratulating us for this achievement. We did the pictures and other records for the Confluence Project, and we returned to our bikes.

It was already night when we began our return to Remanso. We would still have to face more 150 km of sand, earth, holes in the runway, animals, etc. As our water had run out and the thirst was great, we stopped in the village of Lagoa do Priest to celebrate with the locals who had previously guided us.

The confluence 10°S 43°W is surrounded by the caatinga, in sandy terrain of difficult access and with very low population density. The sights near the confluence are Lake of Sobradinho and Serra da Capivara National Park.

We recommend to future visitors, the use of off-road vehicles, appropriate clothing and machete to make way for the caatinga. Besides taking enough water to stand up to the heat of the Bahian hinterland.

Coordinator's Note: The visit has been registered as incomplete because the pictures' sizes don't comply with the DCP Photo Requirements.
