02-Jan-2015 -- In December 2013, I made a big trip by bus, starting at Fortaleza city, Ceará state, city where I was living at that moment, passing by Piauí, Maranhão, Tocantins and Goiás states, and arriving at Lavras city, south of Minas Gerais state, where my parents live. In that opportunity, I spent one day making confluence visits in Palmas city, Tocantins state, and other day making confluence visits in Goiânia city, Goiás state. The narrative of that trip starts on 10S 49W confluence.

By now, slightly more than one year after, I decided to make other similar trip. Starting at Marabá city, Pará state, where I am living nowadays, I made a big trip by bus passing by Tocantins, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and São Paulo states and arriving again at Lavras city. By this time, I spent one day making confluence visits in Cuiabá city, capital of Mato Grosso state, and other day making confluence visits in Campo Grande city, capital of Mato Grosso do Sul state.

My objective in both trips, besides visiting new confluences, is to know new Brazilian states and capitals. In the previous trip, as cited in the narrative, I knew two new capitals (Palmas and Goiânia) and one new state (Tocantins). The state of Goiás I had already known, due to a quick visit made in 2009. Coincidently, the result of this new trip, in this sense, was very similar. I knew two new capitals (Cuiabá and Campo Grande) and one new state (Mato Grosso). The state of Mato Grosso do Sul I had already known, due to a quick visit made in 2011, when I visited 21S 52W confluence.

After having worked at December 30th and aiming to use all the time possible of my vacations, I left Marabá in December 31th at 7:00, not mattering with the fact that I would pass the New Year’s Eve in the bus. My intention was leaving Marabá in the night of 30th, but I didn’t find a bus in this time.

The first destination of the trip was Goiânia city, and the estimated duration of the trip was 24 hours. My wife and my son would travel to Belo Horizonte city in January 2th, when I would be in Cuiabá, and, in January 8th they would travel to Lavras, when I would be there, waiting for them.

Yet in the morning, few hours after leaving Marabá, we arrived at the line between Pará and Tocantins states, marked by Araguaia River, which in this region is about 1,500 meters wide. The last city of Pará is São Geraldo do Araguaia, and, in the other side of the river, lays Xambioá city. As there isn’t a bridge, the crossing is made by ferry. There is a bridge over the river some kilometers downstream, at Transamazônica Highway, but the bus preferred to use a different highway.

We stopped to have lunch at Araguaína city, Tocantins state. From this moment, the bus started to have problems of overheating and started to stop in almost all gas stations of the road, delaying the trip. Only when we are at Paraíso do Tocantins city, 360 kilometers after, the bus was changed.

The New Year arrived when we are between Aliança do Tocantins and Gurupi cities, yet in Tocantins state.

We arrived at Goiânia city at 10:00 in the morning, according to my watch, or 11:00 local time, whereas the Midwest region of Brazil, which owns Goiás state, adopts saving time, while North region of Brazil, which owns Tocantins state, don’t adopt it. The trip lasted 27 hours, 3 hours over the estimated.

My final destination of this first leg was Cuiabá city, not Goiânia, and I only passed by Goiânia due to lack of option. Then, as soon as I arrived there, I bought a ticket to Cuiabá. I got a ticket scheduled to noon, that is, one hour after.

We retake the trip in the previewed time and we stopped to have lunch at Indiara city, Goiás state. When we arrived at line between Goiás and Mato Grosso states, the night had already fallen. This new interstate border is also marked by Araguaia River, and I was impressed when I saw the difference between the two points of the same river, the one in that I crossed yesterday, by ferry, and this one in that I crossed now. Here, the river is less than 20 meters wide. They are the two utmost points of the river. Here, I was near its source. There, I was near the place where it ends, when it flows to Tocantins River.

One more night traveling by bus, and we are now at January 2th, day in that my wife and my son would travel to Belo Horizonte. In the moment in that my bus was almost arriving at Cuiabá, the plane with my wife and my son was taking off in Marabá going to Brasília, the first leg of their trip.

We arrived at Cuiabá at 6:00, local time, after other 19 hours of trip. The Mato Grosso state has, circumstantially, the same time of Pará state and, then, I needn’t to adjust my watch, when passing by Goiás. This is because the time zone of Mato Grosso has one hour less than Pará. But, due to Mato Grosso has saving time, it has one hour more. After all, the hour is the same.

The whole trip was, so far, 46 hours long, in that we travel 2,320 kilometers. Despite this, I wasn’t tired and I had mood to spend the entire day visiting confluences. The decision of starting the confluence visits immediately was a change of planning in relation to the previous trip.

In the trip that I made one year ago, when I arrived at each city, after the trip by bus, I went straight to the hotel in order to rest. Only in the following day I did the confluence visits and, after the visits, I went straight to the bus station in order to take the bus to the next city. By this time, I inverted the planning. Instead of spending one night at the hotel before visiting confluences, I decided to spend one night at the hotel after visiting confluences.

My motivation to change the planning was the following: in the day dedicated to visiting confluences, I must walk in the bush, I get sweaty and, sometimes, dirty of soil and dust. And, immediately after, I must go straight to the bus station and take the bus. In the last visit of the previous trip, I fell in the mud and dirtied all my clothes, as described in the 17S 50W narrative, and nevertheless I must take the bus in order to travel the last leg of the trip.

Changing the planning, that is, spending a night in the hotel after visiting confluences, and not before it, I have the opportunity to take a shower and change my clothes in the moment in that I’m more need to do this. In reality, in the previous trip, I didn’t do this manner because I supposed that, after traveling a lot of hours by bus, I wouldn’t have any condition to start immediately the confluence visits. This assumption was false. I sleep in the bus very well, and even after 46 hours traveling, I was very well.

A third alternative, obviously, would be spend two nights in each city, and sleep in the hotel before visiting confluences and after visiting confluences. But, I couldn’t do this, because the trip would linger a lot, and I would spend all my vacations.

Back to the narrative, I arrived at Cuiabá, had a snack, rent a car and headed to the first confluence of the day, the 15S 56W one, located northern of Cuiabá city.

I caught BR-251 highway heading to Chapada dos Guimarães (Guimarães’ Plateau) and then the MT-351 highway, as known as Manso road, due to it headed to Manso Lake. This last highway was in bad condition, with a lot of holes. Along the way, it’s possible to see the rocky cliffs of Chapada dos Guimarães.

In the moment in that I was almost arriving at the beginning of dirt road leg, the plane in that it was my wife and my son landed at Brasília, the city in that they would make a connection to Belo Horizonte.

The dirt road leg, ten kilometers long, was in bad condition in some parts, with big holes, and steep ascent and descents. Despite this, I hadn’t hardness to manage it. I stopped the car 2,100 meters to the exact point, where I must left the main road and enter on a secondary road, which heads up to 900 meters to the confluence. Apparently, it was possible to go ahead by car, but, as it wasn’t too distant, I though it’s better to go on foot. And, as I could realize, soon the road would become very bad to cars.

The hike on the road was calm. Soon I must left the road and start the hike on the bush, which wasn’t so easy. The bush was tall and with a lot of stones. In compensation, the landscape is very beautiful, as showed in the photos.

During the hike, the sole of my right tennis started to unstick, and I must to walk more carefulness in order to avoid it unsticks completely. I started to ask to myself if it would resist all hikes that I must to do in this trip.

I got all GPS zeroes and made all the way back to the highway. In the moment in that I was almost finishing the dirt road leg, my wife and my son took off in Brasília going to Belo Horizonte. The time while they waited by the connection almost coincided with the time elapsed to visit the first confluence of the trip.

Fortunately, unlike the previous visitor of this confluence, I didn’t find any snake or any spider during the hike.

This is my first confluence visit in Mato Grosso state. With this new state, I have now visited confluences in 19 out of 27 Brazilian states. This is also the westernmost confluence visit until now, in 56W meridian. Until then, the westernmost visited confluences, with 4 degrees less of longitude, were 22S 52W and 21S 52W.

This confluence has also an interesting record. With it, I completed confluence visits in all states of Midwest region of Brazil, which has the following states: Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and Distrito Federal. This fact remembers me the comment that I made when visiting 5S 43W confluence, in Maranhão state. In that opportunity, I was completing confluence visits in all states of Northeast region of Brazil, and I saw that to me, which was born and lived almost all my live in Minas Gerais state, it was unthinkable that I would complete all Northeast states before completing all Southeast states (Southeast region owns Minas Gerais state). I saw in that opportunity that the negative highlight of this fact was Rio de Janeiro state, in that, until now, I hadn’t any confluence visit. Then, now, when completing the Midwest region, I make the same comment: it would be unthinkable that I would complete the entire Midwest region before completing Southeast region.

When I came back to the asphalt, I stopped in a bar in order to buy water, batteries and instant glue. I stuck the sole of my tennis and managed to solve the problem, at least provisionally.

In Manso road, I made all the way back to BR-251 highway. Then, instead of came back to Cuiabá, I decided to take the opposite way, in order to approach to Chapada dos Guimarães and observe the landscape. I went more 25 kilometers, stopped and then came back. In this moment, the plane with my wife and my son landed in Belo Horizonte.

When coming back to Cuiabá, I stopped to have lunch in a restaurant. It was after noon. The period of afternoon would be dedicated to the second confluence of the day.

This narrative continues on 16S 55W.
