#1: Sandhill above the Confluence

(visited by Bill Collyer)

02-Jul-2006 -- Visited by Bill Collyer, Barbara, Bronya, Barry, Arianne, Charles, John and Harry.

In late June 2006 in 5 vehicles we set off to visit some remote areas of the Simpson desert including the area where the Hay River disappears beneath the desert sands. We left Birdsville in south west Queensland with each vehicle carrying over 350 litres of fuel plus water and food for three weeks. Our trip average about 25 km per day once we reached the desert proper and fuel consumption ranged between 50 and 100 litres per 100 km. (1 to 2 km per litre).

The confluence itself is situated in one of the toughest areas of the Simpson with the interdunal flats covered in sand "moguls" and rearing sandhills crested with soft wind blown sand. Driving was extremely difficult with constant work required to free vehicles stuck in the sand.

The Simpson Desert is one of the most inhospitable areas on the planet and one of the most beautiful - this confluence sits amid its greatest splendour.
