07-Sep-2002 -- Continued from 31S 30E.

After a last day of hiking and horse riding in the lovely Mkambati Nature Reserve, it was time to return home. One last Confluence had to be attempted on the way - the one at 29S 30E. I had attempted this one in December 2001, but could not even get close to it. A different map showed an alternative route that might get us closer this time.

We made our way to Estcourt via Kokstad, Franklin, Loteni, Nottingham Road and Mooi River. Ten kilometres before Estcourt on the old main road to Durban (R103), we found the turn off to Malanspruit, and a little bit further D385 turned off in the right direction. To my amazement it kept going in the direction of the Confluence until we were about 1.6 km from it. The road was extremely muddy and slippery, and even my 4x4 vehicle threatened to slide off into the bushes at any moment.

No sign of a farmhouse anywhere, so Ferdi, I and two of the kids (Jana and Fraser) jumped across the fence and started hiking, passing a little dam and what seemed to be a small dagga field. Three fences later we reached the Confluence amongst some thorn trees. Navigating the muddy track back to the tar was just as exciting. We celebrated an amazing trip and six Confluences in the pub in Harrismith.
