#1: view of the confluence

(visited by Werner Bonnet and RICARDO VASQUES)

04-Jan-2011 --

Our second expedition, after we have reached 30S 056W at the day before, was toward the 31S 056W confluence near the Brazil and Uruguay border.

Our first difficulty was to prepare a viable route. The maps are not clear and several farm roads are abandoned in that region. Orbital images seemed to be the most reliable solution. Later we found out that some erosions and stones are not easily recognizable.

After leaving the country we drove along the border and found a small farm road that brought us back to the Brazilian territory, 3km from the confluence. The local farmer gave us the permission to cross the land and we walked easily on the stony soil. emus (Rhea Americana) and hares (Lepus capensis) are common in that region. We also observed cactus of the genus notocactus.
