English Version

At the beginning of our winter holidays I had the intention of visiting the 32S 53W confluence in southern Brazil, but I gave up due to the bad weather (5 days with rain). On our last night we stayed in Paysandú, Uruguay.

Sunday morning, luckily it dawned without rain, we left the hotel to cover the remaining 350 km to our house in Buenos Aires. The first section we would drive on Route 24 of Uruguay, which links Paysandú with Fray Bentos, until now unknown to us. The first stop was in San Javier, a small town lying on the Uruguay river with the peculiarity of having a population descended from Russian immigrants by 90%. They were celebrating the anniversary of the town, so a part of the morning left us around the square where a fair had formed, with stalls selling traditional Russian food and spirits.

The second stop was in Nuevo Berlin, near Fray Bentos. This is another small town also lying on the Uruguay River, and in the vicinity of where the confluence 33S 58W is, easily accessible, but due to the rains I was not convinced to try the conquest since it requires a 700 meter walk from the route. I told myself, who knows when I will be back here. I put on some old shoes, disbursed the GPS and started a walk through a high plantation and (as I feared) with waterlogged areas impossible to get around. With muddy and cold feet I approached until I reached the point, happy to have been able to conquer my first Uruguayan confluence and in addition to such a poorly planned way.
