#1: The Confluence from 10 m

(visited by Rainer Mautz, Elionora and Der Schneemann)

25-Dec-2020 -- This is the first out of 8 confluence reports on our 11-day trip through the western part of South Africa. But the journey actually starts with a bicycle trip in Namibia.

The offices are closed, visiting friends and relatives is not recommended if not forbitten. If you have a digital job, it doesn’t matter where in the world you work from. So, we escaped the dark and cold European winter by renting an apartment in Cape Town. But before we would move in, we travelled over Christmas and New Year in South Africa.

We started our road trip on confluence day, the 25th of December in Cape Town at noon time. We drove northwards on the main highway N7, followed by the minor road R44 and finally a gravel road which is missing this confluence point by only 23 m. I call this type of confluence a “drive-in”. It is astonishing how many drive-ins there are in this world. It would be an interesting task to mark all confluences, that have public access roads within 100 m. I guess that a couple hundred confluences can be visited without leaving the car.

The confluence is on an agricultural field. This year they had grown wheat. It had recently been harvested and only the stopples remained. Therefore we could visit the exact zero-location.

After the confluence visit, we continued northwards and spend the night in the fine Cederberg Ridge Wilderness Lodge near Clanwilliam.
