#1: The confluence point lies in a grove of gnarled gum trees, many of which are dead

(visited by Ross Finlayson)

12-Feb-2013 -- After sightseeing/hiking in the spectacular Grampians National Park, I decided to pay a quick visit to this confluence point - a little to the west - before I returned to Melbourne. Surprisingly, despite the fact that this is quite an easy point to visit, mine was only the second recorded visit to this confluence point, and the first in more than 11 years.

It was a warm summer day - around 32 degrees - when I visited the point in the mid afternoon. I parked on Holmes Road, about 580 metres east of the point. From there I first hiked across a field, and then entered a grove of very old, gnarled gum trees, who's shade provided a little relief from the heat. Several of these trees had fallen over and died - apparently of old age and/or lack of water.

This region of Victoria looks very dry right now. The confluence point in particular, being in a grove filled with dead dry wood, looks like a tinderbox. I suspect that some future visitor to this point will find nothing but charred logs.
