05-Jul-2008 -- EQUIPE CURICACA E MARRECAS COM CAJÚ

Tudo começou no Bar do Santana.

05-Jul-2008 -- TEAM CURICACA AND MARRECAS WITH CAJÚ CONQUER 7S x 42W

by Arão Lobão

The expedition started in Santana's Bar in Teresina, Piaui, Brazil, when Paulo Nery arrived to tell Aaron Lobão and Fernando Gayoso what a mutual friend, Heitor Gil, had told him about a site on the World Wide Web that records pictures and reports of expeditions to confluence points of longitude and latitude.

The team met again - Arão Lobão, Paulo Nery and Fernando Gayoso - after visiting the site www.confluence.org, and set July 4, 2008 for our attempt to reach 7.0.0 S x 42.0.0 W. At our final planning meeting we identified the best route for access to the confluence point. Using Google Earth, we decided to start in the Piaui city of Oeiras, near the river Itaim, which provides best access to 7S x 42W by pickup truck via a road that connects to Santa Cruz.

The Google Earth images showed the terrain in that region of the state to be rugged, hills broken only by a little vegatation, stones and bare earth. Although a 4x4 motorcycle could probably get relatively close, maybe as close as 3 km, the ground looked to be rather uneven and difficult to cross, so we decided to take two motorcycles and 4-wheeler with us.

They also took machetes and ropes in case they might need them to facilitate the final climb up hillsides both steep and covered with dense brush. Other items, minor but no less important, were taken to make the trip possible and enjoyable. Estimated route of travel from Teresina is 600 Km.

Ready for some adventure, they drove out of Teresina at 4 p.m., July 4th, in a Toyota 4x4 pickup, double cabin, loaded down with baggage, tools and a Susuki 400 cc, and pulling a trailer carrying a Honda 350cc 4-wheeler and a Yamaha 250 cc. The team was heading toward 7S x 42W.

That night they slept at Curicaca, Arão's country place, on the banks of Lake Mesa de Pedra, at the meeting of the rivers Sambito and Cajueiro, near the city of Aroazes, Piaui. In the chapel of Santo Expedito at Curicaca they asked for God's protection and for a successful expedition.

Beyond having accurately estimated the difficulties of the journey and Arão's wanting to host his friends, the team wanted to try to reach 7S x 42W in daylight. The team left Curicaca at 7:55 am, on July 5th, driving towards Oeiras. Arriving in Oeiras, the first capital of the state of Piaui, at 10:17 a.m., final equipment checks were made, including calibrating all the tires.

The team arrived in Briona, a rural village near Oeiras, at 11:15, where the truck was parked in the shade of an umbuzeiro tree. The people there, Dona Maria Rêgo, John and his wife Orosina, greeted them with great attention and care, and answered questions about the lay of the land, how to best approach 7S x 42W. Most importantly, as the owners, they gave the team permission to enter the property.

Still in Brion, two events drew the attention of Fernando Gayoso, an engineer with many years of experience regarding the ecology of Piaui. He commented first that the vast and dense groves of carnauba palms that exist on the banks of the river Itaim are threatened with extinction. He noted there were no young trees, showing an imbalance caused by humans and/or animals. Secondly, he noticed that fences had been erected to protect young palms from grazing cattle. But, interestingly, a few passageways had been built to allow the animals access to the river Itaim. Thus, "the vaqueiros" (Brazilian cowboys) have easy jobs. Instead of the hard work of rounding up the cattle, all they have to do is wait for them to walk to the river bank.

After these preliminaries and with new information, the team unloaded the motorcycles and 4x4, tied on the other equipment and drove off toward 7S x 42W, about 2700 meters away up a hill. At about 670 meters from the confluence point, the team could drive no further, so they dismounted and continued on foot, leaving behind the stony ground, and using a narrow path of sandy soil made by generations of cattle.

With the aid of GPS, they arrived at the exact point: 7 of 00''00'S - 42 of 00''00 'W shortly after 3 p.m. on July 5, 2008. At the confluence point, the team completed procedures recommended by www.confluence.org, took the pictures required for proper registration, and set a large stone -- about 50 cm tall and of triangular shape -- to mark the exact location.

However, it is important to note that the team used the GPS register system called "SAD69", which is better for scouting in this part of the world and not the DATUM WGS84 system. This would cause a difference of about 59 meters from the point required by the confluence.org rules, but is well within the acceptable margin of 100 meters for a visit to be acceptable and complete under the rules.

While at the confluence point, the team observed, sadly, the degree to which the native woodland has been devastated, and although still existent, much of the wood has disappeared due to hunters and the cutting of hardwoods, which are protected by law. The most important varieties are the following:

Cedar (Cedrella fissilis)

Jacareúba / Guanandi (Calophyllum brasiliensis)

Ipê (Tabebuia spp.)

Imbuia (Ocotea porous)

Rosewood (Jacaranda sp.)

Mahogany (Swietenia sp.)

Angico (Anadenanthera sp., Parapiptadenia sp., Piptadenia sp.)

Pau-Brasil (brazilwood)

Mission completed, the team returned to Briona, arriving at 4 p.m., exhausted and hungry. After resting a little, reloading motorcycles and luggage, the team drove to Oeiras for a late lunch of "Capote do Galego" (chicken d'angola). On the way back to Curicaca, but still in the city of Oeiras, the team ran into some friends, Mr. Caramba and Lourival Granjeiro, who were very helpful and attentive in listening to an adventure story.

The team arrived in Curicaca at 11:02 p.m. and and had a deserved rest. Next morning, July 6, after a typical breakfast of seasonal fruits (oranges, sweet lemons, bananas and a local fruit called "umbu"), sugar cane juice, fresh cow's milk, cassava cakes, eggs from range chickens, butter, cheese and bread, they left for Teresina and were back by noon, already planning a new adventure to mark another confluence point.

The team wishes to recognize that Mike Stricklin plays the important role of official translator and the team representative for international affairs.
