#1: Looking at the Confluence from 21 km distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz and Elionora)

20-Nov-2016 -- This is the first out of two reports reaching confluence points on our round trip through Gabon.

0°SN 10°E is an extremely interesting confluence in terms of its digits: a hyper-confluence (i.e. the degrees remain integer valued after division by 10) and located at the equator! This still unvisited confluence point is a must-visit for any confluencer.

It is located in the dense jungle that covers Gabon by 90%. In addition, it is in the flatland of the Gabon Estuary. The nearest road is 21 km away. This suggests itself as a very difficult adventure – but a closer look at the satellite image reveals that there is a village within 1 km distance. Moreover, there is a track visible that starts from the national highway N1 south of Kango and leads in various curves to this village.

When we came along highway N1, I planned on taking this track to the village with our 4WD. But as we left the highway for the track, we were confronted with deep mud. Only a caterpillar was able to make it through. Due to the long distance (21 km) to the confluence, we didn’t consider any other means of transport such as walking.

My suggestion to future attempters is to come during the dry season. Track conditions improve significantly in July or August. But November is not suitable for a visit as is the rainiest month of the year.

CP visit details:

  • Distance to a road: 21 km
  • Distance to a track: 1 km
  • Distance of car parking: 21.6 km
  • Time at turn around: 1:00 PM
  • Measured height: 6 m
  • Minimal distance according to GPS: 21.6 km
  • Position accuracy: 3 m
  • Topography: flat
  • Vegetation: rainforest
  • Weather: partly cloudy, 28° C (felt temperature)
  • Given Name: The Jungle Hyperconfluence

The story continues at 2°S 11°E.
