#1: Looking North

(visited by Alpar Kovacs and Felix Sibsa)

11-Dec-2010 -- Learning from the previous team's failed experiment, we chose our trip date in the dry season. After detailed planning, we left Kumasi early in the morning and traveled up to Nasia. At the main junction just before exiting Nasia, we turned left and followed an unsurfaced road 30 km to Janga village, which is close to the White Volta River and also the end of the road. The river meadow is used to cultivate rice and the higher areas are populated by shea trees.

After a short walk (3.12 km) from Janga village, we reached the White Volta where we persuaded one of the local fishermen to ferry us across the river in his boat. On the other side we followed a path used by farmers which passed very close to the confluence point. We crossed a few bean plantations and were met with many curious looks from local farmers that we encountered.

On the trees you still can see debris (2 m from the ground) from the last flooding event, so I am not surprised that the area is inaccessible in the wet season.

We spent few minutes for both GPS units to be reading the correct coordinates, but the north direction was still different so we took the pictures based on our compass.

After fulfilling the mission, we had time to visit the village and the rice fields where they just started harvesting.
