#1: The Confluence from 20 m distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz and Elionora)

01-Mar-2015 -- This is the second out of 5 reports, describing confluence visits in the Philippines. The story continues from 14°N 121°E.

Within our 2-week vacation on the Philippines, we visited 7 islands on a round-trip by car and car ferries. In the Philippines this kind of travel is called “roll on roll of” since it is possible to drive directly on the ferry with a car. After leaving Luzon Island and hopping over to Mindoro, Baracay, Panay, and Negros, we reached Cebu Island, where this confluence is located. We first had to cross the high mountain range to get to Cebu City, where we visited the Chinese Taoist Temple.

Around lunch time we took off from Cebu City heading northwards along the east coast of Cebu Island. When the coastal road reached a distance of 1 km, we turned into a side track. Also this track would have been drivable, we preferred to have a walk to the confluence, such that we could get a taste of the area. At a distance of 345 m, a path looked promising – we took it and it was again the right decision. After climbing a little hill with some farm houses, we directly reached the confluence point.

Interestingly, there is now a little hut just 2 m from the confluence point. Obviously, this hut is new, because it was not documented on the previous visits in 2001 and 2006. Some goats were occupying the confluence point, but with our appearance, they decided to hide behind the hut. The confluence is now on garden land, with a nearby banana plantation. Only 30 m away, there is another hut where an elderly lady with her grandson seems to live. When we were about to leave, they saw us. We waved friendly and they smiled friendly back but then we started our return trip without initiating a conversation. Smiling was in this case the better means of communication rather than the use of spoken words.

The next morning, we took a ferry to Leyte Island.
