28-Jan-2008 -- This is the first of a series of 83 confluence visits during our voyage from Nigeria to Europe and back to Nigeria around the entire African continent.

It is 9 a.m. and we are leaving our camping site about 30 km outside Kontagora. The previous day we drove from Abuja via Minna, stopping at the Gurara falls, to Tegina and Kontagora. It was our first day en route to Europe from Nigeria.

From Kontagora we continued to Bin Yauri and took the road leading towards Rijau. This is a very interesting road with more camels as vehicles on the road. This road leads about 10 km past the Confluence. We took a small path and followed it in the direction of the Confluence; after a couple of km we found a small group of people busy harvesting same sort of melons and fabricating nice bowls from it. The path split numerous times and we were lucky to take always the right one, as we later found out. We crossed a hilly forest section and ended up in front of an already harvested field of millets; the path ceased to exist at this point and we were about two km from the Confluence.

It was a very isolated place with no signs of anyone living nearby. Adding to the fact that we had all our belongings in our vehicle to travel to Europe, we hesitated to carry on by foot and crossed the harvested field where we got stuck again. We were on the verge to turn around when we saw in the distance a motorcycle driver, and of course there must be a path again. We made our way to this point and found a small path, which lead us to the Confluence. The grass was so dry that it generated a lot of dust when you walked trough it. This is definitely not a place for someone who suffers from hay fever. The Confluence lies amongst a widely spread settlement. The people there were very shy and did not come close to the vehicle at all.
