07-Nov-2008 -- Thrilling No Man's Land

Africa Overland in stages. This trip lead us mainly through Mali heading back to our car park at Sukuta Camping in Gambia.

After the last Confluence 13N 6W we made a loop through Burkina Faso and came back into Mali:

We leave the graded laterite piste heading to Koro in Mali after passing Burkina custom and immigration post at Tiou. We are not stamped in yet and so we are supposed to cruise the no man’s land between Mali and Burkina Faso. Close to the track we pass a big waterhole with lots of cattle around. We follow various cattle and bicycle tracks through dense bush surrounding wide open dry sabkha plains (flat plain, high in salt). It's a constant try and error process to keep the right direction. Finally we found the confluence point within some bush outskirts. Not too far away we see a couple of nomadic huts.

To carry on towards Mali we did not follow our tracks back and decided to try another route. A small track lead us through a little village where lots of kids were on the road just coming back from school. Like the Pied Piper Of Hamelin the children followed us and even more appeared when we took some photos.

We reached the main track not too far away from the Mali custom post. After passing custom we just carried on and realized in Koro that there was no more police post. Asking some locals they told us that the police checkpoint is about 12 km back and obviously we just bypassed it while searching the Confluence. So we drove back to the police post to get a proper immigration stamp. For the guys it was a bit confusing that we arrived from the wrong direction and it needed some discussion to convince them that we were entering Mali and were not departing to Burkina and a clever gendarme even wanted to fine us but gave up soon ;-).
