#1: A view of the area

(visited by Luis Felipe Trigo Boix)

19-May-2001 -- On May 19, 2001 I visited 19ºN 100ºW (alt 2,254mts) – my third degree confluence.

This attempt to a confluence started from Avandaro, a golf resort near the picturesque village of Valle de Bravo – some 2 1/2 hours west from Mexico City – where my wife and I were spending the weekend.

I drove from Avandaro to Temascaltepec, which is under 70 Kms. away. Once there I took the wrong road (wrong for the purpose of my trip, but very worth while because of its scenery, towns and people) and climbed to Real del Alto and San Andres de los Gama before arriving into San Simon de Guerrero (see map picture #5).

From San Simon there is a secondary road (dirt surface but in good condition) that takes you somewhat closer to the degree confluence point. When I left the car I was at 2.15 Kms. from my target (19°00’43.8"N 99°55’02.8"W), I thought this was going to be easy but I was wrong.

The journey was really beautiful, in the early part I walked across corn fields (recently planted) in a very hilly area. Quite soon I was going down a steep hill side, crossing a river, up another steep hill side, and again and again and again.

It took me one hour and forty five minutes to cover the 2+ Kms. distance. Very tiresome but very worthwhile.

The degree confluence is at the top a hill called by locals "picacho" (which is a very common name for mountains in Mexico roughly meaning 'peek'). It is quite high and has a great view over the surrounding area.

After a total time close to four hours to go and be back I took the more direct road to Temascaltepc and from there back home. This has been my most difficult (and challenging) degree confluence but it was fascinating for what I was able to see.

I am getting to see parts of my country that I never imagined existed.

Picture #5 shows our start point (pink pin) and the degree confluence point (green pin). (This picture is presently unavailable).
