17-Feb-2004 -- We had already tried to reach the Confluence 21N 56E a few days before, but large sand dunes blocked our way there. This Confluence, on the contrary, is quite easy to reach. But one has to be careful with the sharp stones on the way there, because they might slit your tires. Some friends of us were in the area only a few days earlier and damaged their tires severely. But if one drives slowly and carefully, the goal will be reached after about 2-3 hours driving through the desert after leaving the tarred road leading from the desert village Haymā' to the coast.

This Confluence is situated in the gravel desert of Oman, which is covered here with many larger stones (5-40 cm), too. The vegetation is very sparse, but compared to other regions, one can find here still some bushes, acacia trees, and enough firewood for a campfire. The area is a nature reserve and a game reserve for the, in earlier times nearly extinct, white Arabian Oryx antelope. Sometimes one may run across gazelles or camels here as well. To visit the reserve you need to get permission from your national Omani embassy. We did not know this and got into difficulties with the rangers. The Confluence is situated only about ten kilometres from the fenced reserve.

Exactly on the Confluence, I left the horns of an antelope that we found southwest of Haymā'. It should still be there like on the photo. We visited the Confluence on 17/18 February 2004 and stayed there overnight in a tent.

If you set your GPS receiver to the geodetic datum for OMAN instead of WGS84, you will find a point 295 m east of the WGS84 Confluence. There I built the confluence numbers 20N 57E with some stones. On the horizon you can see our cross-country vehicle, exactly at the WGS84 Confluence. The panorama view was photographed from the "OMAN" Confluence, instead of WGS84, too. The sun rose almost exactly in the East, in the West you can find the WGS84 Confluence.

We experienced many adventures during our expedition. Unfortunately, we did not see any scorpions or snakes in the desert, but we found many lizards, a big spider, many camels, gazelles, and strange bugs. On the coast of the Indian Ocean we saw many rare birds, and dived in a fascinating underwater world. South of Masqaṭ we visited some fishing villages and got to know the local people. The Omani population is very friendly. There are only a few tourists in this country and any foreign visitor to the villages is something special. Near al-Sīfa we camped on a dune close to the ocean. An old man who earned his money as a woodcutter brought us wood for our campfire. We had a hand-and-feet conversation and paid him for the wood.

Roads and tracks in the mountains are very crazy constructions, thus driving can be a big challenge. Once, our cross-country vehicle simply had no more force to proceed on an ascending slope, in spite of 4-wheel drive! In a village that was difficult to reach, we rented a boat and drove with a local and two children to a fascinating dive location. Afterwards, we gave the children some sweets and were happy about having learned to know some interesting village people. We were fascinated by the simple way of living of these people, here at the 'end of the world'.

Contrasting with these scenes, we had also some encounters with jet fighters in the desert. Sometimes, they passed only 200 m away from us, and only 20 m high. Five minutes later we heard bomb detonations behind the horizon. One explosion was really intense and we could even see its smoke cloud at the horizon!
