#1: The Confluence from 10 m Distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

25-Nov-2019 -- This report is the 4th out of nine reports reaching or attempting confluence points during my 2-week bicycle trip around Cuba. The story starts at 21°N 76°W and continues from 20°N 77°W.

This confluence is just 5 km beeline distance from the province capital Las Tunas. On my arrival in Las Tunas at noon time, I was dehydrated, hungry and overheated. It took me an hour to cool and calm down. But still, it was simply too hot to continue. At 2 PM, when the sun had started to burn less, I hit the road again.

Half way, the road was not asphalted anymore and the typical pot-hole zig-zag began. The nearest I could get from the road was 500 m. Between the fenced areas, I found a footpath that brought me a little closer. Luckily, I met Carlos on that path. Since I assumed that the confluence was on private land, I asked him, if he could help me to access the point. He was an honest and thrusting man and even if he might not have completely understood my aim, he helped me. We went through some gates, followed various footpaths over fields, bushes and forests until we approached a thicket without footpath. My GPS showed 91 m and I thought that I didn’t have to overstretch his kindness just to get a zero reading. So, I documented the confluence right where we where while he curiously observed my doing.

On the way back, Carlos invited me to his house and family. Later I continued cycling to the town Guàimaro, where I spent the night a nice private bed and breakfast place.
