“Boca de León” Municipality of Jacala, Hidalgo.

5.6 miles from “El Naranjo”, 2.2 miles from “Boca de León”

This confluence is in the western Sierra Madre in the state of Hidalgo. The nearest city is “Jacala” at 21.7 miles. The vegetation is Medium semi evergreen forest, the weather is warm semidry.

We arrived at the confluence on September 14th, 2003 at 14:30hrs.

From the city of Jacala you take the highway towards Tamasunchale, after 6.2 miles you reach the town of “Cuesta Colorada”, in it there is a detour towards “El Naranjo”.

We started from the city of Pachuca (Hidalgo state capital) at 8:30am. The team was my family: Aida, my wife; Aidita & Raulito, our children; Max, our dog and myself.

To be better oriented we used a Pocket PC with a 12 channel EMTAC GPS, WAAS enabled. We acquired some top charts and aerial pictures of the region. We used ArcPad to display maps and photos and as interface to the GPS. This equipment is extremely useful and reliable, it allows you to see in real time your movement on a map or aerial photo.

After having traveled 137 miles, in 5 hours, we reached the closest point to the confluence reachable by car. Fortunately we where at less than one tenth of a mile from it, however, there was no straight line approach to it. We had to walk close to two tenths of a mile to find a place to climb a hill.

There is no path to the confluence, we had to open our way across stinging nettle (urtica urens), cacti, mosquitoes, ants and lianas. We all ended stinged and bitten, as I was leading the way I ended up with the most ‘damage’ including two wasps that got upset because I walked next to their honeycomb.

The climb was very difficult, Max (the dog) had a rough time since he is short and with lots of hair.

It was hard to believe, being at only 150 meters from the confluence and having so many difficulties to progress just a few meters, Aidita, my daughter, asked every so often “How much more to go?” and I responded “only 50 more meters”, “only 30 meters”. At moments we lost the signal due to the foliage density, but thanks to the 12 channels system we got a reading in a short time.

Something funny happened, we planned the trip two weeks in advance, we took the equipment and supplies needed, including two packages of fresh batteries for the camera, insect repellent and water. But when we got to the nearest-place-by-car point we left everything in the car, it seemed easy to get to the confluence but in the end it took us close to 45 minutes. And when we where finally there we realized that the batteries on the camera where almost empty, we where thirsty and bitten by mosquitoes. Fortunately the batteries where good for the necessary pictures… but we still remember the thirst and the bites.

It was very rewarding to get to the confluence point, to reach our goal, my son says this was the last time he goes out with us but I know that his adventuresome spirit and the memory of this journey will make him join us in another trip.
