Deutsch

30-Jan-2004 -- It is January 30th early morning when we sit together having our breakfast one kilometre from Confluence 22N 49E. Exactly 1 kilometre, because Andy had measured the distance the evening before to train for the upcoming marathon. Around 9:15 am the four wheel drives are packed again and Heiko is fully concentrated on his target point, Confluence 21N 49E.

He guides us through a wonderful and frequently changing desert landscape of flat sand dunes and large plain gravel fields. Suddenly a voice in the radio says that two cars are heading for him. Who else could it be than the "Guard of the Desert"? After an intensive discussion, the "Custodians of the Law" let us proceed further on our journey in the never ending and barren countryside.

We have driven for two hours when Heiko becomes stuck for the first time. He repeats this exactly one hour later. Both times he is freed very fast, due to the strong help of others following him.

At around 1:00 pm we reach an oasis on waypoint 21° 6.052'N 49° 3.546'E. This stop is used by Andy to fill up his fuel tank. Just two kilometres before the Confluence, we pass an old well, no. S 924 of Aramco. The Confluence 21N 49E is in the middle of a dune valley, which we reach just 10 minutes later. We roll off the canopy between two cars and enjoy the landscape with fresh coffee and sandwiches.
