#1: Panorama from confluence point

(visited by Frank Mahoney, Joan Mahoney, Catherine Foster, Michael Giddinge, Heide Wirth and Mahmud Abu Wafaa)

30-Dec-2006 -- We visited this site during a 14-day trip from Cairo, Egypt to Gabal `Uwaynāt in Sudan. We explored Wādiy `Uwaynāt over Christmas and planned to visit two confluence points (25N 26E and 26N 27E) on our way to the Ammonite Escarpment near Abū Mungar during our return. The most direct route to do this was to go over the Gilf Kabīr Plateau and head north through the Great Sand Sea.

We ascended `Aqaba Pass on 28 December and spent a cold night camping on the plateau. The following morning we headed north along Wādiy Mashi and crossed high dunes at 24°09'6.82"N 25°43'1.84"E. From there we headed northeast through an area without any recent tracks. The area is quite stunning but difficult to navigate with wide and high dune fields. None of us had experience traveling through this area and some of our party wondered whether documenting the confluence sites was manageable given our limited fuel and timeline.

We arrived at 25N 26E on the afternoon of 30 December (el hum de le la) and found numerous stone tools in the area. We buried a bottle of French champagne under a collection of stone tools and blue tea pot at the Confluence (see photo). Please let us know if you make it to the area and remove it.

Continued at 26N 27E.

If you would like additional info about the trip or area, please contact Frank or Mike.
