English Narrative

English Narrative

31-May-2017 -- Once again, we were in the mountains of Nepal. The return flights to Kathmandu require a time buffer for bad weather. The weather was good and so we had time on our hands and the opportunity for an excursion to the confluence point 27° North 85° East.

We planned the trip with our local friend Dawa Lama, who was very interested in our project. He organized a car with a driver and wanted to come with us himself. The information on the journey time was very contradictory, so was the proposed route. We came to an agreement. For the outward journey, we took a short road that has been constructed recently. For the return we took the much longer route proposed by the driver. We always stayed south of the mountains. We met at 8 am at our hotel and our tour could begin. We drove on an extremely muddy slope over the first mountain ranges surrounding Kathmandu. Later the road became better, it went through several deep valleys and again and again climbed up to almost 2000 m up to the flats south of the Himalayas.

About 20 kilometers before our destination, we left the main road and turned onto the E-W Hay. We went to the junction of the road leading in a southern direction to Kalaiya. On this road, we got a good impression of the villages in the south of Nepal. We crossed Kalaiya and on the outskirts of town, our driver asked the astonished locals about the conditions of the roads leading to the CP. We turned into a very narrow path and went onto the fields.

We parked the car and walked about 100 m. For the trip of about 150 km we had needed a 6 hours’ drive and reached the confluence point around 2 pm. We gave our friend Dawa our GPS device and he was obviously pleased with the exact determination of the point, the “confluence dance”.

We were very lucky that the fields had not been tilled yet and we could walk on them. On the way back we stopped for a long break at the market in Kalaiya, visited the market and ate Dal Bhat, the Nepalese main course. On the main road we drove back to Hetauda, then back to the west. We spent the night in Sauraha on the edge of the Chitwan National Park. When entering the village we saw the return of the elephants from the tourist safaris and then the sunset at the river with the crocodiles and a rhinoceros in the far distance.

The next day we went back via a big construction site or road to Mugling and then headed back east to Kathmandu. All in all it was an impressive and nice trip!
