  38°N 21°E (visit #2)

#1: The confluence area

(visited by Andreas Paiha, Michaela Mattauch, Alfred Niessl, Wolfgang Spiegel and Heinz Katschnig)

05-Sep-2006 -- For the year 2006 our sailing holidays were planned in the greek waters of Ionian sea, Adriatic, starting from Lefkás.

Weeks before I first came across confluence.org and I was fascinated, because on a lot of sailing trips before I sailed very close by confluence points, but that was very insignificant for me. But not this time...

Infected by the "confluence fever" I found out in google earth that some confluence points in our holiday area were unvisited and one is unsuccessful visited.

My intention was to make the first succesful visit! So we started on Tuesday, 5th September with our sailing yacht "Patricia" - a 40' sloop - from Agía Efimia, a small village at the east coast of Kefallinía Island to complete 38°N 21°E.

The weather was sunny but calm, so we had to motor the approximate 27 nautical miles. Sometimes we stopped and the crew jumped into the water, swimming and cooling in 200m deep water. One time I pulled them with a rope gently through the dark blue sea.

Approximately 1 hour away from the C/P a good sailing breeze was coming up, but I decided to motor ahead, because it is more easy to hit the C/P accurately with engine than with sails.

After a few searching in the meanwhile good going waves we hit the position exactly. Unfortunately there is nothing but water in the main directions, so i decide to photograph the seen landscapes. In the caption of every pic you'll see the approximate direction of the photos I took.

The first mate Alfred congratulates me and then we celebrate the successful visit with the small silver bottle filled with finest scotch whisky. This was passed in good old sailor's style on from skipper to every single crew member!

A few minutes later we set sails, and with a very good westerly breeze we sail south to the town of Zákynthos...
