#1: NES Panoramic view from the road

(visited by Philippe Burtin and Antonella Burtin)

09-Nov-2019 -- We made a short trip in southern Italy last november and we drove from Napoli to Lecce. We took this occasion to pay a visit to 3 CP along the N41 Latitude line and this is the first one.

N41 E14 is the closest CP from downtown Napoli and is very easy to reach as it lies less than 60 m from a large paved road.

We choose to stay on the road shoulder because the field in which the CP is located was soaked and muddy due to the heavy rain falling on the area for the last three days. The pictures were shot from there 54 m north of the point. Not much to see in the vicinity of the point but each of my dear fellow confluencer should rush to the Museum of the oriental University in Napoli, 61 Via chiatamone. There you can see the first map of China with geographical coordinates (1708 – 1717) designed by an italian missionary. Here is the english caption of the display and the story of that map. Interstingly, the author of the map chose to locate the 0° Meridian in Beijing at that time. Some parts of the map show a stunning accuracy (Hainan island) while other parts reveals the limits of chinese exploration at that time: only the western coast of the Taiwan island is depicted. Enjoy your visit !
