#1: John at confluence, behind him is to the north

(visited by Curt Christiansen and John Alcantra)

17-Jun-2001 -- (continued from 48N102W)

We headed west on ND 23 through Ft. Berthold Reservation. The road skirts the north edge of Lake Sakakawea, formed by the Missouri River behind Garrison Dam. It was one of the worlds largest earthen dams when it was built in 1954. We crossed the Missouri and headed west through the aptly named Antelope Oil Field. We turned north on McKenzie county 55 for two miles. As we turned west on a gravel road we saw a herd of antelope playing in the field. They were too far away for a good photo. After 2½ miles, we parked the car on the side of the road and headed south across a field for ½ mile to the confluence. Back in the car we made a quick stop in Keene, ND for John to call his wife who was 8½ months pregnant with their second child.
