#1: border looking to west

(visited by Frank Majcenovic)

06-Jul-2002 -- This is a semi-remote and difficult '49er'. A Washington State approach looked longer so I planned a 2 day backpack approaching via Cathedral Provincial Park in British Columbia. A trail on the eastern side of the park left me within a 5.5 km tough bushwack of 49/120.

Took Hwy 3 to before Keremeos, turn south onto Ashnola River Road. Then south onto Ewart Creek Road for 3 km to trailhead parking for Ewart Creek trail. (Water sketchy; bring filter!)

Start trail. After 4.0 km cross Ewart Creek and pass Juniper Creek trail. After 7.5 km pass by turnoff to Mountain Goat Creek trail. At 10.0 km stay right and down to creek fork of Ewart Creeks and Newby Creeks (some maps label this creek Haig creek). (If you find yourself going uphill fast, then you missed the turnoff)

From the fork, it is 5.5 km and 1800 feet vertical to 49/120. Stay close to the western edge of this ridge as you head south. The first 2.5 km are steep with lots of deadfall and thick brush.

I camped 2 km up the ridge at the 6000 foot level. I had intended to camp up at the border but I collapsed like a house of cards on this "death" ridge (as it is known).

The next day I continued sans pack and with new knickers. At the 6200 foot level, the deadfall thins out and easy subalpine walking continues to the confluence. Note: this ridge is disorienting so make several waypoints for the trip back.

Got to the confluence which is 66 meters north of the border cutline. The border has nice views to the west of Haystack mt, Haig mt and Cathedral park. I also paid my respects to survey monument 101. Later geeks!
