(visited by Gary Meddick and Simon Peet)

09-Sep-2005 -- Our mission started over a year ago when Simon Peet’s sister, Vivien Robson of Montreal, emailed him that the confluence of 50° N 92° W was just south of the Town of Sioux Lookout where we live. Simon asked Gary Meddick, the GIS Officer in the same building Simon works, if he was interested helping to find out more about this project.

After visiting the website and finding the spot on a map, we planned on visiting the location last winter by snowmobile. However, due to some very heavy snow fall in the bush and slush on the lakes, we decided that getting to the confluence in the winter was difficult and risky, and we would wait until open water and go by boat.

Friday, Sept 9th, 2005 we grabbed a boat and headed out. The weather was great, sunny, high of 21°C, cool breeze. We crossed Abram Lake from the boat launch, traversed Abram Chutes and part of Minnitaki Lake, and headed into Troutfish Bay. After traveling to the back part of the Bay to get as close as possible by boat, we started out on foot for about a kilometre hike. If you have ever been in Northern Ontario, you may know about “blowdown”: trees that have been blown over by the wind and make for slow going in the bush. Thankfully, we found some moose trails for part of the walk. After walking nearly 2 km’s to cover 1 km, we found the spot. With all the tree cover at the site the best our Garmin Map76 could give us was 14.3m accuracy, good for up north under cover. We took the standard pictures of the GPS, the view, us, and headed home, all within an enjoyable 4 hour trip.

We would like to thank Vivien Robson for setting us on this journey and Mother Nature for some great weather.
