#1: Looking north from the confluence

(visited by Gordon Haverland, P.Eng.)

02-Sep-2001 -- This confluence is easy to get to from either Alberta or Saskatchewan. As I found out with my travels along the Canada/US border on the August long weekend, the Alberta/ Saskatchewan border is not exactly where we think it is.

The Alberta Act and the Saskatchewan Act of 1905 place the border at 110W (4th meridian), but the border as it exists today is slightly west. At 52N, it is about 120 m west. The government of Saskatchewan has a Game Refuge on the south side of a road which runs about 240 m south of the confluence, and on the north side of this road is a survey marker. There is nothing on the marker to indicate its position (usually we have to look this up from a serial number or something), but since it lines up with a fence line placed for the government of Saskatchewan, I think it is meant to lie on the official boundary.

The point 52° 0' 0.0"N and 110° 0' 0.0"W is at an elevation of 708 m according to my GPS unit. As I've travelled north more or less along the border, the vegetation looks to have a little more life. But things are still very dry in this area.
