#1: The Confluence from 15 m distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

03-Sep-2017 -- This is the 3rd out of 9 reports reaching confluence points during a one-week cycling trip around Ireland. The story starts at 54°N 7°W and continues from 54°N 8°W.

I continued riding westwards, coming through Boyle, Charlestown, and finally Killasser Farm. The area is spread with highmoors and peat cutters where doing their job along the route. I also passed the nearby Lake Croghan Lough and continued on a washed-out gravel track. On this hardly used track I was able to get as close as 250 m to the confluence point. I parked my bicycle and entered the bog. Based on abandoned houses and stone walls between the fields, one can tell that this area had been populated some decades ago. I was able to follow such a stone wall up to 20 m to the confluence point.

Right at the confluence, there is a stunted tree - which is quite a coincidence since there are no other such trees around. Even though the tree is small, it must be quite old – since Gordon’s visit in 2008 the tree has not changed much.

I continued on the gravel track westwards and it took a long while until I got on a good road again. Via Foxford I reached the town Newport and spent the night there.
