04-Sep-2008 – The confluence on the southern border. Confluence points happen to be different: sometimes it is necessary to reach them through bogs, or snow-covered wood, breaking the trail along straight azimuth line through thickets, being guided only by GPS indications, while another confluences can be approached by a car. One are located in picturesque places, others are in the territories fenced with a barbed wire. Some confluences force you to prepare for months, searching for the simplest route and determining time when it will be possible to pass with smaller problems, while others could be visited hurriedly and preparation takes some hours…

The confluence N54º E61º is located in the middle of the field, in 2.5 kilometres from an asphalt road, in the east of Chelyabinsk region. The map and satellite photos did not foretell any complexities with visiting. The weather was good, small rains were only in the mornings. There was only one small problem which could make our visit impossible, despite the presence of easy access roads – it was closeness of the Russian-Kazakh border. The CP is located in the frontier zone, with neighbour state is no more than 5 kilometres.

Long time we doubted in possibility of visiting this confluence point, though Kazakhstan is the former republic of the Soviet Union, though it is the visa-free state for Russians. It would not be desirable to joke with frontier guards, especially, just at this time joint Russian-Kazakh manoeuvres took place, and both countries Ministers of Defence were there. We had no enough time to find the information about legal getting in the border zone. From the order of FSB [Federal Security Service] dated 2006, Eugene (John) Kulaev has found out that frontier zone violators are subjected to the fine from 100 to 500 roubles [$4-$20] and detention for up 3 hours. Having learnt about these "draconian" laws, we have decided to take chances…

On September 4th, 2008, in 11.30 a.m. I met Eugene Kulaev in the settlement Stepnoy (Chelyabinsk region). I came there by bus from the south, he drove from the north by Ford Maverick. In a rural shop we got a bottle of vodka (for “just in case”) and then we set off to the east, towards Troitsk town. On the road we discussed what fairy tales we'll tell to frontier guards, in case of our meeting, and probable disposition of frontier posts.

We reached the village Malaya Sanarka and turned there to the right. And just after one kilometre we saw the sign warned about entrance to a border zone. Again we discussed all variants of succession of events and, having washed out all possible troubles, we became frontier zone violators. We passed the first settlement Skalisty – and didn't notice a frontier post, so we drove further… The automobile navigator regularly showed a country road we drove onto. We moved slowly demonstrating that in case of a pursuit we are not going to get away! The second settlement Logovoye – again there's no outpost. We continued to drive onto the country road looking out for a field road which should lead to the confluence. Here was a forest stripe dividing fields. We didn't saw any road on the right. The necessary road is slightly further and passes at another side from the forest stripe. We turned and drove very slowly. The arrow of the navigator became perpendicular to our road, the CP is about 500 metres. We passed forward up to the gap between trees and turned to the right in the field. The harvest was already taken, the soil was dry, therefore, we got directly on the confluence point without stopping. It was first time when I reached exact confluence spot by a car! We left the vehicle only for making pictures towards compass directions.

Back way was faster, still not trusting in our luck – everything has turned out too easy! We breathed freely only when we passed the frontier zone sign. We set off the car to photograph and just saw the helicopter flying along the border. What could happen if they'd caught us on the confluence point?
